The Game Awards 2026: GTA 6 makes the eligibility cutoff by one day
The Game Awards FAQ puts the nomination cutoff at November 20 at 9 p.m. PT, and GTA 6 launches November 19, so the biggest release of the year qualifies with one calendar day to spare.

The cutoff rule, checked
The Game Awards' own FAQ states the rule plainly: "Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT." Anything that reaches store shelves after that moment sits out the entire 2026 ceremony, with one exception. The fan-driven Players' Voice category uses a later cutoff of November 30.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with unlocks rolling out at midnight local time. That puts the release date one calendar day ahead of the deadline. By the time the eligibility window closes on the evening of November 20, the game will have been on sale for roughly two days in most regions.
The margin matters because the alternative was exclusion. A release on November 21 would have made GTA 6 ineligible for every judged category this year, and the show has turned games away for exactly this reason before: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launched in December 2024, after that year's window had closed, and it had to wait for the 2025 cycle.

When the nominees arrive
The official site says nominations arrive in mid-November 2026, and as of November 6 no exact date or time has been announced. Nominees for most categories come from an international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets. Each outlet submits an unranked ballot listing its top five choices per category, and the five games that appear on the most ballots become the nominees. When the count ties, a category can carry six or more.
The timing is tight for a November 19 release. To meet balloting deadlines, the FAQ allows publishers to give voting outlets advance or pre-release access for critical evaluation, and reports indicate reviewers will get GTA 6 ahead of launch. Whether that is enough time for over 100 editorial staffs to form opinions on a 100-hour open world is the open question of this awards season.
How the winners are picked
Winners come from a blended vote: 90 percent from the jury, 10 percent from public fan voting. Fans vote on TheGameAwards.com, and in China through Bilibili. Fan voting closes on Wednesday, December 9 at 6 p.m. PT, the day before the show.
GTA 6 has its own history with the fan side of this event. It won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards in both 2024 and 2025, a fan-voted category, while the game was still more than a year and then a few weeks from release. With the game out on November 19, it leaves that category behind and enters the judged ones for the first time.
The field it joins
This section is analysis, not prediction. The lineup below lists confirmed 2026 releases that land before the November 20 cutoff, with dates as verified at the time of writing.
| Game | Release date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil Requiem | February 27 | Capcom, ninth mainline entry |
| Crimson Desert | March 19 | Pearl Abyss open-world action |
| Phantom Blade Zero | September 9 | We covered its first patch |
| Marvel's Wolverine | Fall 2026 | Insomniac, PS5, exact date unannounced |
| 007 First Light | 2026 | Outlets disagree on March 27 versus May 27, so we leave the date open |
| The Blood of Dawnwalker | 2026, date unannounced | Could still land after the cutoff |
The benchmark in the room comes from last December. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 received 12 nominations at The Game Awards 2025, two of them in a single category, and won nine awards including Game of the Year. That is the most decorated single title in the show's history, passing the mark The Last of Us Part II set in 2020. Whether any 2026 release approaches that count is unknowable before reviews and ballots exist.
GTA 6's position is unusual in one respect. Most games on this list have been out for months, giving juries time to revisit them. GTA 6 will have been playable for less than a month when ballots are due, with evaluation built largely on advance access. Freshness can help with memory and coverage, and it can also work against the deliberation that usually shapes a Game of the Year shortlist. Both outcomes are possible, and we will not pretend to know which one lands.
One more rule worth knowing: games released in previous years stay eligible in judged categories when the jury feels new content or updates justify it, so a 2025 title with a strong 2026 expansion is not automatically out of the running.
