Apex Legends test write-up

Technical Benchmark & Telemetry Summary

Respawn's Source fork remains the best-running battle royale on PC. At 1080p mid settings our rig holds 240 fps with frame pacing so even that the 1% low barely registers. Steam Deck support, pulled in 2023 and restored in late 2024 via EAC's Proton path, sits at a playable 50-60 fps.

EA account linking is the only platform hoop, and it merges progress across platforms in one click. Compared to the kernel-driver competition, this is the friendliest big-br shooter on Linux and handheld.

The engine's frame pacing deserves its reputation: across 40 hours of capture, the frame-time variance band stayed inside a 2 ms envelope at 240 fps, which is the kind of consistency aim trainers notice before humans do.

Resolution scaling and anti-aliasing behave sanely for once: upscaling variants cost single-digit frames, and the competitive preset is a documented, stable target that tournament organizers publish. When a settings guide survives a season unchanged, the engine is doing its job.

Gameplay & Mechanics Evaluation

The movement system is the product. Slide-jump momentum, wall-climb, and zipline physics stack into a skill ceiling that the genre's copycats never matched, and ping-first communication remains the smartest team layer ever shipped in a BR.

Season structure is mature: map rotations, weapon craft, and ranked splits refresh on schedule. The long-running complaint is server tickrate under peak load, which hit registration in three-stack endgames; off-peak, it is a non-issue.

Server infrastructure remains the honest weak point: 20 Hz tickrate under peak load is why three-stack endgames occasionally eat a shot. Off-peak play, or the lower-pop regional servers, dodges most of it, and the seasonal infra patches have been trending in the right direction.

The legend roster passed thirty characters, and the ecosystem around them does the onboarding for you: per-season tier lists, pickup-rate charts, and community aim trainers that carry straight over. Arena modes rotate seasonally, which keeps the non-BR playlists from going stale.

Purchase & Monetization Breakdown

The free tier is complete gameplay: every map, every mode, and legends unlockable through play currency if you grind. The battle pass is earned back by completion, which puts the real spend entirely in the cosmetic store.

And the store is the industry's high-water mark for pricing: $20+ legendary skins, $160-tier heirloom bundles, rotating FOMO. None of it touches balance. Set a budget or ignore the shop; the game itself justifies the install.

The battle pass math actually works: completing it returns roughly its own cost in Apex currency, so an active player can stay permanently funded. The danger is purely aesthetic: the store's top tier prices in the range of full games, and FOMO rotations are engineered accordingly.

Crafting materials provide a guaranteed path to every seasonal item outside the store, which quietly caps the FOMO: nothing in the pass is unobtainable by play, and the crafting rotation is documented a season ahead.

Regional pricing and refund paths follow EA's standard policy, and the account-level currency means a top-up on PC spends the same wallet on console. Set a monthly cap before the first store visit; the rotation is designed to test it.

What we tested in Apex Legends

  • PerformanceGood

Source engine tuned for high refresh: 240+ fps at 1080p on mid-range rigs, and the engine's frame pacing is famously even.

  • StabilityGood

Seasonal patches land clean. Server tickrate under load remains the usual battle-royale complaint in peak hours.

  • MonetizationPoor

Heirloom-tier bundles, $20+ legendary skins, and a store that rotates aggressively. The battle pass can self-fund, but the ceiling is absurd.

  • DRMGood

EAC with restored Steam Deck/Proton support since late 2024; an EA account link is required but painless.

  • ControllerGood

Excellent aim-assist implementation and full input-based matchmaking; controller players compete at the highest ranks.

  • HandheldGood

Back on Steam Deck after the EAC Proton fix: 50-60 fps with mid settings and a genuinely playable session length.

  • ValueGood

Free entry, all legends unlockable by play, and the battle pass can pay for itself if you complete it.

Is Apex Legends worth it?

Worth it

  • Slide, climb, and zipline movement is still the genre's best feel
  • Restored Steam Deck support via EAC Proton work

The cost

  • Cosmetic pricing at the very top of the industry
  • Ranked matchmaking in peak hours still flexes lobbies upward
